Spitfire - The First of the Few - 1942

I watch this over and over again. Wonderful film. I’m in love with the Spitfire fighter planes!

Remarkably people comment on all things except the history. While I respect comments about print quality etc., it seems that people who have either rented or bought this film are unaware of history of the run up to WWII. I am sad to say. This film was a mid war boost to British morale in a very dire circumstance. The Battle of Britain was then ongoing and the USA had only recently entered the conflict after Pearl Harbor and HItler's declaration of war on America. I truly wish that viewers would at least use Wikipedia or another resource to get up to speed. I wonder how folks in 2050 will view both Russia/Ukraine and Hamas October 2023 attack. Will they only comment on the quality of the video?

I thought this movie was okay. I wasn't thrilled but it was a pleasant way to spend almost 2 hours. I just wanted to let other shoppers know a few things about it. First, I bought the version of this film from the Reel Vault production company and the print was very good. (I did not buy the Blu-Ray copy.) I was really surprised how clear it was! The sound was also pretty good although I found it a little difficult understanding all of the dialogue with the British accents. And unfortunately there are no subtitles. But there was no crackling or anything like that. Very clean print and sound! I wasn't expecting that due to the other reviews I read. I spent a lot more money for a Criterion copy of another old WWII British film, I Know Where I'm Going, and was disappointed with it. The print and sound were horrible! Secondly, this Reel Vault dvd was the original UK long version of the film, not the shortened 90 minute US version. So overall, I was pleasantly surprised that it was such a good copy of an old movie for the price! However, even though the characters were likable, I found the story and pacing just average.

After decades of inferior copies, this blu-ray from Odeon makes up for the deficit. Released during WWII as a propaganda film, it tells the story of R.J. Mitchell and his development of the Spitfire fighter plane. The movie has been in the public domain for decades, which meant that every little company turned out whatever crappy copy they had access to.This region-free blu-ray is the best copy that I have ever seen. While it has some of the expected flaws in the source material that one would expect of a film from 1942, it is routinely sharp and clear. Well worth the money. It includes some interviews with David Niven and a documentary on the RAF in the war.Leslie Howard produced and directed the movie as well as starring in it. It was his last film before being killed when the Germans shot down a plane he was in (persistent rumor has it that they thought the plane was carrying Churchill, true or not).A good movie not to be missed.

This movie illustrates how poorly prepared the UK was prior to WW2. Serendipity came into play with the Spitfire and Rolls Royce Merlin engine development just as the Nazis were taking all of Europe and the world into war. Without doubt the Spitfire and lesser known Hawker Hurricane when teamed with radar guided command and control made all the difference. The fact that Hermann Goering as head of the Luftwaffe failed to appreciate radar and it's early warning capabilities, with the capable Spitfire as the tip of the spear, doomed the Nazi efforts to attain aerial superiority over Great Britain ending the threat of invasion of the UK. Another great movie titled the Battle of Britain is a must see.

I like this movie, and bought it when VHS was offering tapes for sale, way back, some decades ago, one of first movies I bought. This tells the story of one of the UK planes that really held back Hitler's offense. My gripe is here we are decades later, my hearing is NOT good anymore, hearing aids are limited to me....and this good movie, and many others are NOT closed captioned. A stirring documentary type film with Leslie Howard and David Niven, a good film, and I wanted cc or sub-tites. Nope. I'll give it 3 stars. If it had cc or sub titles, I'd max it with 5 stars.

Propaganda? yes, but to see footage of original Spitfires (made in 1942!!) in action is priceless. As an Englishman I am moved to tears with this film. The Documentary at the end is wonderful knowledge. Thank you for this restoration and having it stream. This is History!

THE FIRST OF THE FEW (1942) is a fictionalized story of British aircraft designer Reginald Mitchell, and his race to create the legendary Supermarine Spitfire. Mitchell produced his masterpiece while battling the cancer which ultimately claimed him in 1937; the film takes a few liberties with biographical details, but as wartime propaganda it's meant to be emotional rather than cut-and-dried history. The film features not only actual RAF Fighter Command pilots in cameo roles, but a rousing sequence with aerobatics performed by Supermarine pilot Jeffrey Quill (the Spitfire's developmental test pilot all the way through the war).Tragically, Leslie Howard himself became a casualty of the air war in Europe; while in Portugal on an ostensibly non-governmental mission, Howard was targeted by German Intelligence agents. The civilian airliner on which he was flying home was attacked by Luftwaffe fighters, and shot down with no survivors. He never lived to see the full success of his final film. It survives today as a memorial both to Leslie Howard and to Reginald Mitchell, and a tribute to Britain's determination to survive against attempted invasion. It also celebrates the magnificent creation which is the Spitfire itself---and has no doubt added to the popular mystique which the airplane has acquired over the last seventy-plus years.(NOTE: the best Region 1 DVD version I've seen is from Odeon Entertainment's 'Best Of British' collection.)

La película es muy buena, con imágenes que nunca había visto de la copa Schneider y la calidad también.

Lovely old film about the creation of the fighter plane. Yes is was a propaganda film but where else are you going to find real planes with a decent sound track these days. Some of the FX were interesting given today's near perfect processes. All in all a very good look into a world that no longer exists.

タイトルがいまいち判りにくいが、The First of The few（少数の始まり、または少数の第1人者）の少数とは、バトル・オブ・ブリテン終了後のチャーチルの言葉「かくも大勢の人々が、かくも少数の人々によって守られた事実はかつてなかった。」の「少数」を指し、スピットファイアやハリケーン等を駆りイギリスを守り抜いたRAFパイロット達を意味する。そして「始まり、第1人者」とは、ドイツの再軍備に危機感を覚え、1936年スピットファイアの試作機を完成させ、量産機の実戦配備を見ることなく病で急逝した設計技師レジナルド・J・ミッチェルのことである。この映画はイギリスを救った名戦闘機の設計者と彼を支えたテストパイロットの物語である。ちなみに、アメリカ公開時のタイトルは、判りやすく「SPITFIRE」である。なにせ字幕の無い輸入盤なので、拙い英語力で理解したあらすじをざっくりと・・・１　第2次大戦初頭、ヨーロッパを席巻するドイツ軍のニュースで始まり、一転して1940年9月イギリス空軍とドイツ空軍が戦うバトル・オブ・ブリテンの最中、とあるイギリス空軍スピットファイア飛行隊の若いパイロットと飛行隊長が談笑するシーンとなる。話がスピットファイアを設計した技師に及ぶと、隊長は空を見上げて「あれは1922年だったか～」と独り言ちる。２　スーパーマリン社のミッチェル主任設計技師のところに、クリスプと名乗るパイロットが自分を試験飛行のパイロットとして雇ってくれと売り込みに来る。彼らは意気投合し名コンビが誕生する。３　ミッチェル技師は、カモメの空中姿勢から新しい飛行機のデザインを思いつき、シュナイダーカップ（水上飛行機レース）にエントリーする機体の設計でそれを具現化する。単葉のスマートな機体は、保守的な会社役員の反対にあうが、最終的にはGOサインをもらい、クリスプの操縦によりレースに出場することができた。参加1回目はレース途中でリタイヤしたものの、2回目以降連続優勝を果たし、シュナイダー杯の永久所有権をイギリスにもたらした。４　シュナイダー杯の功績によりミッチェルは夫人、クリスプを伴い欧州各国の旅行に赴く。ドイツではグライダーによる展示飛行を観賞した後、歓迎のレセプションに招かれる。会場ではドイツの高名な設計技師、ウィリー・メッサーシュミットを出会いお互いの親交を深めるが、酒に酔ったドイツ人から再軍備の話を聞いてしまう。一方クリスプは美しい女性をナンパしていたが、彼女の夫であるドイツ軍人が厳めしい顔つきで歩み寄ってくると、退散してしまう。５　帰国したミッチェルはドイツの再軍備に危機感を覚え、新戦闘機の設計を始める。エンジンメーカー・ロールスロイス社のヘンリー・ロイスに新戦闘機に適合するエンジンを打診すると、彼はミッチェルに戦闘機の名前を問う。「スピットファイア」、ミッチェルの答えにロイスは頷き、「今、マーリンというエンジンを開発中だ。かんしゃく娘と魔法使い、良い組み合わせになるぜ。」と笑ってみせた。６　設計は順調に進むが、ミッチェルは体調を崩していた。クリスプと夫人は体を休めるように忠告するが、彼は設計を辞めることはなかった。ある夜、仕事を続けることを夫人に諫められたミッチェルはこう告げる。「自分はもう長く生きられない。ドイツの危機が迫る中、祖国のためにこの戦闘機の設計を完成させるのが自分の使命だ。」と。夫人はそれを聞いて泣き崩れた。７　やがて試作戦闘機スーパーマリンP300が完成した。初飛行はもちろんクリスプ操縦士だ。会社役員や軍関係者が見守る中、軽快なエンジン音とともに機体は離陸した。しかし、そこにミッチェルはいなかった。病状が悪化した彼は、車椅子に座り自宅近くの空き地で、自分の手掛けた機体のエンジン音を聴いていた。クリスプの操縦により、試作機は水平飛行、ロール、旋回、急上昇、急降下を危なげなくこなしていた。やがてクリスプは試作機をミッチェルがいる空地に向けた。爆音に気づき空を見上げるミッチェル、その頭上を鮮やかにローパスする試作機、コクピットのクリスプが親指を立て「全て順調」とサインを送る。ミッチェルも親指を立て、それに答えた。試験飛行を終え着陸したクリスプを地上にいた一同が笑顔で出迎える。クリスプも笑顔を返し、"Satisfaction!（申し分ない！）"と一言告げた。８　初飛行の成功後、武装の試験を経てスーパーマリンP300・スピットファイアはイギリス空軍に正式に採用され、ただちに生産命令がスーパーマリン社に下った。朗報はミッチェルにも届いたが、既に彼は病床に臥しており、ただほほ笑むだけだった。それから数日後、ミッチェルは静かに息を引き取り、夫を看取った夫人の頬を涙がつたった。９　舞台は再度バトル・オブ・ブリテンの時代に戻る。激戦に明け暮れるイギリス空軍、クリスプの部隊も隊長自ら空戦に参加していた。やがて部下を失いつつも、ドイツ空軍の侵攻を押し返すことができ、地上管制官からドイツ空軍の退却とイギリス空軍パイロットへの労いの言葉を耳にしたクリスプは、操縦席から空を見上げ、命がけでスピットファイアを設計した親友ミッチェルに感謝の言葉を口にした。雲海の上、夕日に向かって基地に帰投するスピットファイアの編隊のバックショットで映画は終演する。　映画は事実と違う点がいくつかある。まずクリスプというテストパイロットは存在しない。複数のパイロットをモデルとしたようである。また、ミッチェルの設計した飛行機は、シュナイダー杯参加機とスピットファイアの間にタイプ224と呼ばれる機体が存在する。空軍の戦闘機として採用を目指したが、性能が要求を満たせず生産されることはなかった。航空機の設計技師とエンジンメーカーの社長（？）が直接会って・・・というのも、あり得ないじゃないか。　とは言え、この映画は1942年（撮影は1941年か？）に公開された。本年はまだ戦時中であり、ヨーロッパでは地中海・北アフリカ戦線及び東部戦線で激戦が続き、太平洋ではシンガポール攻略・珊瑚海海戦・ミッドウェー海戦が行われた年である。当然、英国本土防空戦も当初の激しさほどではないものの、ドイツ空軍はスピットファイアMkⅠ,Ⅱを上回る新鋭Bf109Fを投入、イギリス空軍はそれに対抗するスピットファイアMkⅤを進空させており、依然として空戦は継続していた。映画に出演する機体も実機が使用され、確認できるシリアルNoや丸まっちぃスピンナーからスピットファイアMkⅡであり、部隊コード「SD」から第72飛行隊と推測される。撮影に参加したパイロットの中には、映画公開までの間に戦死した者もいるという。また、ミッチェルを演じたレスリー・ハワード自身も、映画公開の翌年（1943年）BOACの旅客機DC3に乗客として搭乗中、ドイツ空軍機により撃墜され死亡している。　後半のクライマックス、5分間にわたる試作機の試験飛行はMkⅡを似せて実際に飛行している。（一部の急降下シーンは模型と思われるが）。飛びっぷりの美しさは勿論だが、エンジン音も迫力がある。空冷とは違い液冷エンジン特有なのかキーンという甲高い音が混じり、この時期のマーリンエンジン特有の、背面等で一時的に燃料が供給されずブロッブロッと咳き込むような音も、また実感がある。　航空機設計士の映画と言えば、宮崎駿監督の「風立ちぬ」がある。風立ちぬのモデルとなった堀越二郎もミッチェルと同時期の技師であり、彼の設計した９試単戦のシルエットと、ミッチェルがカモメに着想を得て描いた飛行機のスケッチがよく似ていたのが印象的だった。なんとなく、宮崎駿監督はこういう映画を作りたかったじゃないかと思ってしまった。　長くなったが、戦時中の部隊に漂う緊張感（なにせ戦時中の実働部隊で撮影している）やシュナイダー杯に出場した実機の動画等、飛行機好きにとって貴重なシーンが多々ある。字幕がないので抵抗があるかもしれないが、スピットファイア関連の本とともに鑑賞すれば充分楽しめると思う。むしろ、余計な字幕がないだけ映画に没頭できるかもしれない。最後に関連本として、少々古いが「モデルアート1992年4月号臨時増刊　No387　スピットファイア」をお勧めする。　添付の写真は、自分が作った1/48スケールのスピットファイア試作機である。ベースはタミヤ（旧版）、キャノピ、プロペラは自作し塗装は筆塗り、シリアルNoや国籍マークも手描きしている。

Mit den wenigen, denen so viele so viel verdankten, meinte er die Piloten der Royal Air Force, die Tag für Tag ihr Leben riskierten (und oft genug opferten), um England in der "Battle of Britain" gegen die deutschen Luftangriffe zu verteidigen.Auf diesen Ausspruch Churchills spielt der Titel des Films an. "The First of the Few", der erste dieser kleinen Gruppe von Helden, ist kein Pilot, sondern derjenige, der den Piloten ihre wichtigste Waffe zur Verfügung stellt, nämlich das legendäre Jagdflugzeug "Spitfire". Wie es zuging, dass der Konstrukteur R.J. Mitchell zu einem der ersten Kriegshelden und -opfer wurde, ist die Geschichte dieses Films.Zu Beginn begegnet uns Mitchell als visionärer Erfinder, ein junger Mann zu Beginn der Zwanziger Jahre des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Das Flugzeug ist noch eine junge Erfindung, und die existierenden Maschinen sind ungeschlachte, sperrige Apparate. Mitchell träumt von einer organischen, harmonischen Flugzeugform, inspiriert durch den Körperbau der Seevögel. Mit einiger Mühe überzeugt er die Manager der Firma, für die er arbeitet, von seiner Vision, wobei seine Frau Diana und sein alter Freund, der Testpilot Geoffrey Crisp, seine treuen Mitstreiter sind. Mitchell hat Erfolg: seine Maschinen gewinnen wichtige Wettbewerbe, erweisen sich nicht nur als konkurrenzfähig, sondern als überlegen, setzen sich durch. Er erlebt noch den Jungfernflug der Spitfire, bevor er stirbt - the first of the few.Das ist schon eine bewegende und fesselnde Geschichte, auch wenn sie nur wenige Momente äußerer Dramatik enthält und ihre Spannung fast ausschließlich innerer Art ist. Der Film ist ganz und gar das Werk Leslie Howards, der ihn produzierte, Regie führte und in grandioser, bewegender Weise die Hauptrolle spielte. Sein R.J. Mitchell ist ein feinsinniger, nachdenklicher Mann, ein Mensch mit Idealen, dem man abnimmt, dass er sich für eine Idee opfert. Rundherum agieren ausgezeichnete Schauspieler, vor allem natürlich David Niven als Mitchells Freund und Mitstreiter Geoffrey Crisp, der mit seiner heiteren, spontanen Art das Geschehen belebt und dafür sorgt, dass das Ganze keine allzu bitterernste Geschichte wird."The First of the Few" war Leslie Howards letzter Film (abgesehen von zwei Produktionen aus dem Jahr 1943, in denen er nur als Sprecher zu hören ist), und ein passender, wenn auch viel zu früher Abschluss der Karriere eines Schauspielers und Regisseurs, der sich in seinen letzten Lebensjahren ganz in den Dienst seines Landes gestellt hatte. Howard starb am 1. Juni 1943, als - und das ist, mit Blick auf das Thema seines letzten Films fast ein wenig unheimlich - das Passagierflugzeug, mit dem er nach Portugal reisen wollte, von deutschen Kampffliegern abgeschossen wurde.Einen großen Anteil am Reiz des Films hat die Musik des berühmten englischen Komponisten William Walton; die musikalischen Themen des Films haben im berühmten "Spitfire Prelude" den Weg in die Konzertsäle der Welt gefunden.Der einzige Wermutstropfen beim Anschauen des Films (dem ich, als solchem, bedenkenlos fünf Sterne gegeben hätte) ist die technische Qualität der DVD. Die Bildqualität ist, in Anbetracht des Alters, gerade noch akzeptabel, die Tonqualität jedoch stellenweise, vor allem in einigen Passagen gegen Ende, so schlecht, dass man den Text mehr errät als versteht. Dafür also ein Stern Abzug. Dennoch empfehle ich den Film wärmstens: als interessantes Zeitdokument; als bewegende Geschichte einer bedeutenden historischen Persönlichkeit; und als Vermächtnis eines großen Schauspielers.

Bought as a present for my son who feels out of kilter with modern day and says he would rather have lived through the 20s 30s and 40s or even an earlier decade. Loved all things air shows and Winston Churchill is his hero since he was about eleven. A very individual, individual.
