Compatible for older cartridges
I bought this to test to see if it will fit an older 44 cartridge and it worked. Will have more of these available. It works on the 44 Russian which was before the 44 Special was around. So yes this fits okay for the ancestral cartridge

HKS 29-M vs J-S5 COMP - jury still out
I bought one of each for an old S&W M29-2 because the reviews for both didn't have a clear winner. I figured I'd try one of each then stick with the one I like. I'm still not sure. You'll see this same review in the J-S5 section. The HKS 29-M has the advantage of being easier to fill. Put in the cartridges and twist the amply sized knurled knob to lock them in place. The cartridges are held in place loosely which seems to be by design and has no ill effect. Pop it in the cylinder, twist the knob again and let gravity pull the cartridges into the chambers. There's no tricks, not much to go wrong, and just seems to work well. I like the large knob. It should be especially useful with cold fingers. Removing the cartridges from the speedloader is simply a matter of twisting the knob and dumping the cartridges. Easy. The Safariland J-S5 COMP works a bit differently. It is about the same size but the button is noticeably smaller. The button is only used when filling the speedloader but I found it a little tough to latch in. With this speedloader there is a bit of a trick to filling it. Fill the holes then flip over placing the cartridges on a flat surface. Careful not to drop any. Then hold down the housing and push and turn the small plastic knob. You'll hear it click in. Load the cylinder by placing the cartridges in the chambers and push firmly on the body of the speedloader. The cartridges will positively snap into the chambers. Emptying the speedloader is a little tricky. It would seem just twisting the plastic knob would be enough - but it isn't. You have to stick your fingers down between the cartridges and push the post down. Then twist the knob counterclockwise and the cartridges will be freed.I like the HKS for how easy it is to fill it. Loading the cylinder is easy enough.I like the Safariland for how nicely it snaps the shells into the cylinder but loading it is not so easy.

Work Fine
These speedloaders work fine for my Dan Wesson .44 Magnum. Shipping took quite a while though.

Best speed-loader. Period.
HKS has a simple, but effective design that has stood the test of time. Has just enough “wobble” to practically self-align!
